There’s one thing you shouldn’t compromise on when it comes to your wedding dress, and that’s the fit! Not only should your dress fit you perfectly; it should be comfortable, and most of all you should feel amazing in it! So you’ve found the perfect dress, the big day is approaching and you need the perfect fit – your wedding alterations are just as important as finding the dress itself so make sure you do your research and ask the right questions to make it as stress free as possible. Here, we talk you through the process and what questions you should ask when it comes to your wedding alterations, which we of course can help you with.
When Should I Book My Wedding Alterations Appointment?
We would recommend booking your first fitting for 8-10 weeks prior to your wedding, however most boutiques and seamstresses will accommodate an earlier appointment prior to this for a consultation – it may be just to put your mind at rest that the alterations can be done and of course that you are happy with the seamstress and the boutique. A seamstress should work with you to asses what alterations are required, and discuss any design features you would like to change if any.
What Should I Bring To My Appointments?
There are a few things that are a must for your first appointment and every appointment after that; you should ideally have on the underwear you will be wearing for your wedding day, but if you don’t have this make sure you wear something very similar- it’s amazing the difference this makes when it comes to fitting your gown. Your gown may require cups to be added and these should be supplied by the seamstress. Your shoes are a must as most dresses will need some alterations to the hem, so without your shoes this alteration is impossible for a seamstress. If your wearing shapewear you will also need to bring this with you!
How Long Will My Appointment Last?
Generally each appointment will last around an 1-1.5 hours (ours are one hour), however this would depend on the requirements and amendments involved at each process. Some may be slightly longer and some shorter, if you have time, don’t rush them, as this will make it a much more stress free process for all involved. Treat it as part of your wedding dress journey, have fun and make a day of it!
How Many Fittings Will I Need?
After your first consultation, you will generally have two-three fittings for your wedding dress alterations- however this depends on the complexity of the alterations and any other external factors which may occur. Generally, most appointments will be mid-week (for busy brides we also offer evening and weekend appointments) so make sure you plan ahead for this, most appointments can be made in advance if required and your working to a tight or busy schedule. Expect a fitting every 2-3 weeks during the lead up to the wedding.
How Much Will It Cost?
Bridal alterations come in many forms, and cost can be a tricky one- it completely depends on the seamstress, the boutique and of course how many alterations you require and the complexity of your wedding dress. Generally we would say to plan for around £150-£300 for general alterations. For bridal re-styling wedding alterations this is likely to be more, however most seamstresses will confirm the cost at consultation. We offer 3 packages here- bronze, silver and gold:
What Happens If I Lose/Gain Weight?
After your first consultation and fitting you should always try and maintain your weight and shape. We understand that in some cases this does not always happen. Most seamstresses are used to weight fluctuations and will allow for this within reason, however, bear in mind that a further cost may be incurred if the dress has to be re-altered. However, we do not charge for weight gain alterations.
Can I Make Amendments To My Dress?
Most seamstresses and boutiques can make required amendments to your gown; most things are possible and you’ll be amazed at what the right seamstress and we can do to convert your existing gown into something that looks like it was originally designed just for you. This may just include: taking it in/letting our, shortening your hem, lifting the shoulders or straps- or could go as far as adding straps, sleeves, beading, changing necklines or removing parts of the dress which you don’t like! If you’d like to personalise it, make sure you do your research and find the right seamstress for you and your dress. We offer a restyling service which the costing is determined at the free consultation.

Spends and Budgets
Having some kind of budget or preferred spend we would like to or need to stick to is always a sensible place to start when it comes to shopping for a wedding dress. No matter how little or how big your budget is, it is important to be realistic when shopping for your gown; don’t go to boutiques that are out of your reach in terms of price, yet if you’re looking for something completely unique and designed just for you, make sure you go to the right place that can help you design and create something. Be open and honest with your chosen boutiques, as this will always help both you and them, and save time and potentially upset in your dress shopping journey. Keep in mind that if you buy off the peg and you’re also looking for accessories you will also need to incorporate these into your budget.
If you have the time to be able to plan and prepare for your wedding dress shopping, use it! We recommend you start your dress shopping at least a year before your wedding date. Off the peg dresses that have to be ordered can take up to 9 months to come in, if you’re going bespoke the process normally takes around 6 months. Avoid the last minute panic, and stress, the earlier you start the better.
You’ll probably have some kind of idea of what styles you like and those you don’t, so make sure you do your research and find the right bridal boutique for you! Look at the designers which you are gravitating towards, or if you’re looking for something completely different, and unique to you, find a designer that can do this for you. Be open minded, ask lots of questions and always book your appointment in advance. It is worth saying that we offer a true bespoke service, so if you are looking for something a little less traditional or more unique, we are the wedding designer for you!
Think carefully about your underwear choice when wedding dress shopping. Wear something that is as close as what you think you’ll be wearing on the day. A strapless bra is always a good idea, and if shapewear makes you feel more confident, and you’ll be wearing this on your wedding day, then make sure you have it on!
Take advice and listen to suggestions from the bridal assistants or designers as they may have ideas you’d not though of. Your entourage know you, and you’ll be able to get opinions and of course reactions from them! Most importantly after listening to everyone else, listen to yourself, as only you will know when something is right. Don’t feel like you should know straight away and don’t put pressure on yourself; if you need time to think, give yourself time to think, and listen to how you are feeling.
Choose Your Entourage Wisely
If you have a big bridal party it’s tempting to want them all to come along for the experience but it can be tricky. We would suggest having a maximum of three people; the more opinions and views, the more confusing it can become trying to please everyone! Pick people who will give you constructive opinions. And if you can’t pick between them, take different people to different appointments!
Keep an Open Mind
Always keep an open mind when wedding dress shopping – what you think you want, may not be what you end up with! Know in your mind what are absolute deal breakers – for example you know you definitely want a sleeve, then try on alternatives, and different styles, as there may be details and designs you’ve not seen before, and they may just be perfect for you.

Firstly, just to put your mind at rest, unless your dress is made to measure, 99% of wedding dresses will need altering in some way, shape or form. So, you’ve found your dream dress, but it doesn’t quite fit right, now you need the perfect fit… here we take you through the process, what to think about, what to prepare and how to go about it, with our expert advice on wedding dress alterations.
Here at Perfect Fit Bridal Couture we have done thousands of wedding dress alterations over the years, and there’s nothing our dedicated couture trained seamstresses have not seen or done, so don’t be phased and always ask. Your dress may need just the hem altering, tailoring to your shape, or you might want to customise it in some way, here’s how to prepare and what to expect when it comes to wedding dress alterations…
Finding a good seamstress is imperative, your bridal store might offer wedding dress alterations in house, or have a recommended seamstress to use, if they don’t look for recommendations from others, ask family, friends or look for reviews of seamstresses in your area.
Visit your chosen seamstress, or wedding dress alterations service as soon as you have your dress to discuss your alterations with them and this will also give you chance to share any other needs and requirements you have.
Wedding dress alterations are normally carried out around 8 weeks before the wedding date, so you can get booked in and tick another thing off the list! Be prepared to have fittings done through the week, most bridal stores are fully booked with try on appointments at the weekend so make sure you have an ideal available time that you can do mid-week, if possible.
First Alterations Fit
We cannot stress this enough, ALWAYS bring the underwear, shapewear/underskirt and shoes with you… to every appointment. The fit of a dress can be determined by these things and the seamstress may not be able to continue and do your appointment if you do not have them with you.
If you have a backless dress and a bra is not needed, but you feel you need a little bit extra shape in that department your seamstress can help with this, but please remember that added cups do not offer support, and they will not do what your bra does. I you’ve bought a backless dress, but you’re not happy with the way it’s fitting, or thought it would fit when altered due to support it’s giving you, think about an added illusion back panel or lace panel.
Shapewear will help give you a smooth line so if you’re planning on wearing it make sure you have it at your first fit, it will give you a true picture of how you will look on the big day!
Hems, almost every bridal hem will need altering in some way- Why do they make them so ridiculously long, I here you say! Bridal designers and manufacturers have to try and accommodate for all brides, including different heel heights, and you can take up, you can’t add on!
Whether your dress is 1 inch, or 5 inches too long it will still be the same price, as it’s the same alteration. If your dress is only slightly too long, it may be cheaper to change your shoes, or add a hoop, your bridal seamstress should advise on this.
Depending on the alteration, depends on the number of fittings you will have, but generally you will have 2-3 fittings in total before collection of your dress, so bear this in mind on the run up to the wedding day. Plan ahead to avoid any added stress.
After your first fit it is imperative to try and maintain the weight and shape you were when the dress was fitted. If you lose or gain weight quite rapidly during your fittings, this will mean extra alterations, and extra cost for you if anything has to be re-done.
Remember your seamstress is only interested in the fit of the dress, not your weight or shape- they will have seen every single shape and body type going, their focus is making you look and feel fabulous! You need to be open and honest about your body and what are deal breakers for you in terms of dress fit and tell your seamstress about anything that may alter your body shape across the fitting process.
Cost is always a tricky one when it comes to wedding dress alterations. Please remember that seamstresses are highly skilled and altering wedding dresses is not easy, they have tirelessly trained, and experienced many a wedding dress to allow them to get the perfect fit on yours.
Most brides are not experts in the construction of wedding dresses, there will be hidden layers, complicated internal construction and potentially handwork to finish the alterations on your dress, all of which is extremely time consuming. And don’t forget the costs of your alterations also includes your fittings, your beautiful surroundings, excellent customer service you receive, steaming and preparing your dress for the big day, and on occasions lots of reassurance and emotional support! As the saying goes, you get what you pay for.
After all is said and done, bridal seamstresses LOVE their job, they must do, at times it can be stressful and emotional, but when they see their brides looking and feeling fabulous, it makes it all worth while!

Vogue Magazine the fashion Bible came calling,
Last year was huge for us, it was our 10th Birthday as Perfect fit Bridal Couture. 10 years of bringing our talents and creativity to Brides from across the UK. For every year of dedication each one spent growing into the next we developed, we worked with amazing people and finally we created a Couture collection to be launched this year. It was just as we came towards the end of this process that something that only happens in dreams for designers like us happened. In all of those 10 years we could never have prepared for what would come as we entered 2019.
An email landed in Wendie’s inbox at the end of January. Her first thought………did I read that correctly? She read over the email a few more times before it really sunk in……
Vogue Magazine! An invite to appear in VOGUE! Not only in the magazine but online too. Astonished is one word to describe the feeling in the studio, overwhelmed is another, to say we were excited just feels like a under statement. This was mind blowing our collection was a representation of our Art each one a manifestation of Wendie’s imagination.
The hard work didn’t end there though we now had the task of putting together an amazing shoot to use in our Vogue feature. It had to really shine, stand out just like our Couture collection. A captivating look to work with the collection was what we wanted. An opulent dreamy feel to the photography showing the dresses in all their glory. The detailed embellishments of the first dress with a subtle split to the skirt for a exquisite alternative to your classic style of dress. The second dress a divine example of today’s modernist boho bride, graceful with gentle detailing along the waist.
The studio was bright and inviting, both models perfectly matched to style of each gown. The make up and hair skill fully applied to compliment each one we were ready to shoot! Ready to be part of the Fashion Bible itself. The shoot day was so much fun, everyone brimming with a vibrancy and excitement. We were all aware that this was an opportunity of a life time and the feeling was palpable. Mathew, the Photographer had the style we needed, an attentive mind focused on his artistry. He created a relaxed but professional atmosphere and just knew how the shoot needed to look. A matter of days later and the photos were with us ready to make their way to the biggest Fashion magazine in the world and we could hardly believe it.
Containing the news was difficult but only added to the anticipation. For obvious reasons we couldn’t tell a soul until the release date, four weeks of waiting seemed like it would take forever but we were so busy organising our Open day, Newspaper article’s, meeting new Brides that in what seemed like a whirlwind the day came. Waking on the morning of the Vogue release date to receive our copy was like waking from the dream, seeing our hard work showcased on Vogue retail online for the world over to see. The photos were alluring and we were in Vogue not only in the Magazine but on the website too! It was real we were there amongst the greatest designers across the globe.
Yorkshire Evening post we’re delighted to feature our story, we wanted to spread the word as far we could. The photographer came to the studio and captured Wendie busy in her design room, taking some fantastic shots of the main studio too that really showcased the beauty of it all.we couldn’t believe it when on press release date Wendie had a call from her sister “your on the front page” not only the front page but the cover story!
This isn’t the end though for us this is just the beginning. The start of an even bigger adventure, something that has us striving for more. With the support of everyone we love we have achieved one of our dreams we their continued support who knows we could reach the stars!

March the 18th was a very special day for everyone at Perfect Fit Bridal Couture, especially Shona my daughter. Shona had always dreamed of having a classic fairytale wedding when she married her soulmate and as she is my only daughter it was definitely a dream I shared with her. Shona and her soon-to-be husband chose a venue to match this dream in Bagden Hall in Denby Dale-surrounded with fields and woodland for as far as the eye can see, it was perfect for the day they had dreamed of for so long.
We set out to create a small collection of dresses that would be completely unique to Shona and her bridal party, she had always wanted something that would stand out, something that she could call her own and I, of course was happy to oblige and create a classic fairytale wedding dress for her!
Her journey started back in 2016 visiting trade shows in and around Yorkshire to source only the finest quality fabrics for our Brides and at this particular time for Herself. It took some time to find the perfect fabric to create Shona’s dream dress but she eventually fell in love with a beautifully delicate French lace in a Pink blush hue, hand finished with pearl and beaded embellishments. From that we went on to choose the satin and tulles to complete the look. All the fabrics were sourced from Michael’s bridal fabrics who pulled out all the stops to ensure the fabric was with us three months earlier than expected.
The design of Shona’s classic fairytale wedding dress had started, she wanted to make a statement wearing a dress that really had that wow factor!
Starting with a fitted bodice we worked from there bringing the dress to life with a calico toile so Shona could get a good idea of how her dress would fit and choose sleeve length and how she wanted the skirt to fall.
Shona opted for a three quarter length sheer sleeve made from the French lace she had chosen with added embellishments, she had always imagined that she would wear a circular skirt with long train but we wanted to produce something different, something that we knew would grab everyone’s attention, most importantly, her new husbands! We had decided together through the design process that to achieve the volume she wanted we would use layered tulle but how could we take it from your average tulle skirt to the next level and mirror the beautiful blush colour in the Lace. Experimenting with the Tulle fabric I decided to try layers using a mixture of Ivory and Blush pink.
Shona came to see the skirt after it had been made, using the method of layering the fabric creating a beautiful multi tonal effect and a fantastic volume that would definitely turn heads. She was over the moon as was I, a few happy tears were shed that day! I think we both knew then that together we had achieved exactly what she had been dreaming of for all those years.
The dress was almost there all that was left was the hand crafted finishes, Shona had originally wanted a belt but on seeing the dress almost complete we both agreed that a more subtle finish was needed as the lace really spoke for itself. We chose to add appliqués that would softly drape onto the skirt to blend the two elements together.
The last few weeks running up to the wedding were spent meticulously hand sewing the finishing touches and what a difference this made. Here at Perfect Fit we know that this can be the most important part of the design process and will always transform a dress from standard bridal to Couture.
Shona had three Bridesmaids who are close friends and four Flower girls her gorgeous daughters and her niece. It was so important to everyone that the bridal party had very special dresses that would flatter them and also complement Shona’s classic faurytale wedding dress perfectly. The bridesmaids had calf length dresses inspired by her grandmothers wedding dress in the 1960’s, to complement Shona’s wedding dress these were made in a deep Blush coloured satin with an overlay of lace in the same colour for the bodice and Tulle on the skirt.
The Flower girls each had a dress in a gorgeous floral vintage inspired fabric with the exception of Shona’s eldest daughter who had a skirt to match the Tulle of the older bridesmaids. Together with Shona’s dress these all made up the perfect collection that would set the tone of the Fairytale wedding.
The day had arrived, the morning was spent gazing out of the beautiful ceiling high widow of her room over the surrounding fields as everyone buzzed around getting themselves and Shona ready, it was all stations go! The venue had been dressed in blush and ivory flowers, Ivory lace sashes and beautiful glass wear all bathed in a warm glow of candlelight.
The dream was now a reality fast approaching with the usual Early morning wedding nerves and added touches of laughter from Shona and her family members and friends all that was left was for her prince to arrive.
These moments were so precious to us all, watching your only daughter on her special day is something me and my husband and I will never forget. They say a photo can speak a thousand words and the moment captured when Simon, Shona’s Father, see’s her for the first time emulates this beautifully. The superb photos captured from start to finish and the photo booth provided by Dave and Mary at PhotoChaps will hold those moments so we can enjoy them for a lifetime. For this I can’t thank them both enough.
The whole day was exactly what the Bride and Groom had wished for and I’m so happy that I could be so involved in making their wish come true. Her classic fairytale wedding dress was perfect for their big day.
All the love in the world from your Mama.
